SAM XP FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if a student's computer crashes during a SAM XP exam?
SAM XP includes a built-in crash recovery feature that allows a student to resume an exam in the event of a computer crash. Upon re-logging in to SAM XP, the interrupted exam will be listed in red. The student must resume the exam from the same computer to access crash recovery.
What happens if a student loses his Internet connection during a SAM XP exam?
All testing activity is local during a SAM XP exam; there is no client-to-server communication during the test. This means that if the Internet connection is lost during an exam, the test will not be interrupted. The Internet connection must be re-established at the end of the exam so that test results can be recorded to the server. If the Internet connection is not re-established, the test results will remain on the local client directory until the student re-establishes the connection. This can be done at a later time if necessary.
Some students have received a "Keycode Already In Use" message when attempting to enter their SAM XP Student Keycodes, however, they purchased a new keycode in the bookstore. Why?
Unfortunately, a number of SAM XP Student Tutorials were used and subsequently sold by students to various used textbook vendors. These vendors then re-shrinkwrapped the Student Tutorials and sold them to various bookstores throughout the country. To alleviate this problem, the new SAM XP Version 2.5.1 Student Tutorials have been developed with new packaging that will be visibly torn when opened. The new packages are also marked in such a way that used textbook vendors will not accept open packages.
What if I have installed the SAM XP Version 2.5.1 client software on my workstations, but am still using the 2.0 version of the SAM XP database?
If you have installed the SAM XP Version 2.5.1 client software and have not upgraded your SAM XP database to version 2.5.1, your students can continue to take SAM XP exams.
What if I upgrade to the 2.5.1 version of the SAM XP database, but still have the SAM XP Version 2.0 client software installed on my workstations?
You must upgrade your client software to at least the same version as your database. So if your database version is later than your client version, your students will not be able to take exams. In this example, you will need to install the SAM XP Version 2.5.1 client software on your workstations.
If I upgrade my SAM XP database, will I lose any of my data?
If you upgrade your SAM XP database, none of your data will be lost or compromised.
What do I do if I have been using TOM offline but now can't synchronize my TOM work offline?
A change was recently made to the Web site that TOM uses to submit your offline work. You may need to run a program to point TOM to the new Web site, so that your data can be reconciled. Please contact our Tech Support group via telephone by calling (800) 648-7450 and select option 4, or contact them via e-mail at CT.Techsupport@Cengage.com.
When I set up TOM to run from the CD, I'm asked if I want to track my progress. What does that mean and why do I need to have a username, password, and URL? TOM tracks your work to a file that can be later sent to your instructor to show the work that you have completed. You will need already to have a username and password that you can use to log in to the SAM XP and TOM Web site. TOM uses your username and password to track your progress.
What if I can't verify my username and password for tracking my TOM progress?
Check with your instructor before you set up TOM for working offline. You may need to change the URL that TOM uses. To change the URL, place your cursor at the end of the URL line after .com. You can use the backspace key to change the URL to samxp1.course.com.
